Substance used in the treatment of bacterial (as distinct from viral) infectious diseases in humans, animals or plants. Antibiotics inhibit the growth of, or destroy, bacteria and other micro-organisms. An antibiotic can be rendered ineffective as a treatment if antibiotic resistance develops.
